Creative For Kids offers playful designs, uplifting messages, and faith-filled themes in various sizes. Our wide variety of designs and themes create a joyful atmosphere where children of all ages can learn, grow, and feel God's love all around them! However, the success of your wall decals largely depends on the type of surface they adhere to. Understanding which walls work best and which ones to avoid will help you get the most out of your decals.

Wall decals are a fantastic way to bring personality and charm into any space. Whether you're designing a cozy nursery, a vibrant hallway, or a stylish accent wall, ensuring your decals have the right surface to adhere to makes all the difference. The good news? If your walls are smooth, you're already halfway there! And if they’re textured—don’t worry, we have solutions for that too. Click here to learn how to apply wall decals to textured and cinderblock surfaces.

Best Surfaces for Wall Decals

For a seamless application and long-lasting hold, decals work best on the following surfaces:

  • Smooth walls – Light orange peel is not considered smooth, the smoother, the better!

  • Painted drywall – Make sure the paint is fully cured before applying your decals.

  • Glass – A sleek, non-porous surface that allows decals to adhere beautifully.

  • Metal – Clean metal surfaces provide an excellent base for decals to stick firmly.

  • Temperature-controlled indoor environments – Avoid areas with extreme heat, cold, or humidity for the best results.

The Best Paint Finishes for Wall Decals

When it comes to decal-friendly surfaces, not all paint finishes are created equal. The two best options are:img-5784.jpg

  • Eggshell Finish – Smooth yet slightly matte, eggshell provides just enough texture for decals to grip while still allowing easy application.

  • Satin Finish – Slightly shinier than eggshell, satin has a soft sheen that makes it an excellent choice for both durability and adhesion.

After years of designing large-scale kids’ theme environments since 2000, we've found that Sherwin-Williams Duration Satin is a fantastic choice. It strikes the perfect balance between smoothness and grip, ensuring that decals adhere well without peeling prematurely.

Unfortunately, not all walls are created equal when it comes to decals. If you want to avoid the possibility of your wall decal peeling be mindful of the following tricky surfaces:

  • Freshly painted walls – Patience is key! Allow at least 30 days for the paint to fully cure before applying decals.

  • Textured walls – Bumpy or rough surfaces prevent decals from sticking properly, leading to lifting and peeling.

  • Unpainted drywall – Decals may not adhere well and could cause damage when removed.

  • Brick or cinder block – These surfaces are simply too porous and uneven.

  • Porous or textured paneling – Just like textured walls, these surfaces don’t provide enough smoothness for decals to stay put.

  • Outdoor surfaces – Sun, wind, and moisture will quickly weaken adhesion.

Additionally, some newer paint formulations, including low/no VOC paints and paint-and-primer-in-one products, may resist decals due to their stain-resistant and non-stick properties. Always check your wall’s paint type before application to avoid surprises!

Final Thoughts: Set Yourself Up for Success

Wall decals are a fantastic way to add personality to your space, but proper preparation is key to ensuring they stick beautifully. Before applying, take a moment to assess your wall type, finish, and paint age. A little planning goes a long way in achieving a flawless, long-lasting result!

If wall decals feel like too much commitment or effort, consider banners as a fantastic alternative! Whether with or without grommets, banners are easy to install, budget-friendly, and can be switched out every few months to keep your space feeling fresh and exciting. They offer the same visual impact without the hassle—perfect for creating a dynamic look that evolves with your style.
